How It Begins
Liza Legodi and her father, Lesiba, are redefining farming in Bellingsgate, Limpopo, by cultivating coffee beans on their family's 1-hectare plot. In a community where maize has long been the staple crop, the Legodis took a bold step into coffee farming in November 2022. The idea came when Liza's great-aunt shared that coffee farming was once a tradition in the area. Despite no prior experience in growing coffee, the family embraced the challenge, planting seeds on their land and learning throughout the seasons.
The coffee plants have thrived with minimal challenges, unlike other crops that often face pests or disease. Their coffee beans have yielded impressive harvests, and the family has worked tirelessly by hand to clear the land, plant, and care for the crops. The process, from planting to harvesting, takes nine months, with the final product being a preservative-free, pure coffee that showcases natural flavors.
Their product, “Liza's Classic Coffee,” is sold locally, with Liza actively promoting it through social media. This family-driven project represents not only a unique agricultural venture but also the potential for coffee farming in regions like Limpopo, where microclimates are becoming increasingly favorable for coffee cultivation. Through this journey, Liza hopes to inspire others and eventually teach agriculture to future generations
